Rinn-Shannon and District Angling Club in conjunction with the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl Charity proudly hosted a Family Open Day at Lough Rynn Amenity Area Mohill Co. Leitrim on 12 th July 2009.

Mouth watering pig on a spit

A wide range of activities and entertainment were provided for the 163 children in attendance with a bouncy castle, marquee, live music, barbeque, roast pig and expert angling instruction available for the visiting and local children. Representatives of the Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim branches of the Chernobyl charity, who were accompanied by a group of children from Ballymun led by Garda liaison officer Michael Heffernan, were all present to witness the official opening of the event by R.S.D.A.C member and Chairman of Leitrim County Council Thomas Mulligan.

A fleet of boats were provided at the venue to ferry the delighted children on supervised boat trips around the Lough while Recreational Angling Ireland Instructors gave expert instruction in various coarse angling techniques on the banks of the esteemed Lough Rynn Castle Country estate.Despite the intermittent showers a fabulous day was had by everyone with a number of pike landed by junior anglers near the caravan park section of the Lough. While some local children had a basic angling knowledge most of the children had never before experienced the many delights that this wonderful and peaceful pastime has to offer.

R.S.D.A.C would like to give a special thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to the successful running of this noble annual charity event. Were it not for the collective efforts and generosity of the many volunteers, local businesses, host families, R.A.I, safety stewards and club members none of this would have been possible. This display of kindred community spirit will go a long way to ensuring the memories of these children’s visit to Ireland will be filled with happiness and perhaps even foster some added interest in the recreational pursuit of angling amongst local children for many years to come.

A great day was had by all and here is some more photos from Paul Beck Club Chairman
