The Annual Michael Prendergast Memorial Cup Flyfishing Sunday 30th August 2009
On Sunday 30th August Rinn-Shannon & District Angling Club hosted the Annual Michael Prendergast Memorial Cup Flyfishing Competition at Lough Rowan Brown Trout Fishery, Gorvagh County Leitrim.
Overcast skies and calm conditions greeted anglers as the competition commenced with winds forecast to increase slightly as the day progressed. Fishing proved somewhat difficult on the day with many reports of lost fish and trout coming short to the flies. Late-comer John Bradshaw instantly made amends for lost time by hooking 2 trout simultaneously while Lough Rowan regular Gary Lynes hooked and lost 4 fish from the shore.
Despite the strengthening winds, few fish were showing, with only the most versatile of anglers reporting any degree of success. The final whistle came too soon for some at 5pm as all anglers made their way to the slipway for the weigh-in and a chance to see how their fellow competitors fared over the course of the event. Mohill angler Val Fitzpatrick Jr fought of stiff competition to claim the Michael Prendergast Memorial Cup for heaviest overall bag with his boat partner and self professed "mentor" John Bradshaw catching the day's heaviest fish claiming second heaviest bag in the boat section in the process. Building on last year's success at The Pee McLoughlin Memorial Cup Drumsna angler Jason Monaghan had the 3rd heaviest bag from a boat with a fine fish. The shore competition was won by R.S.D.A.C member Nick Richards with 2nd and 3rd place going to Ollie Gallagher, Ballinamore and Clint Taylor, Mohill respectively.
Thanks must go to all R.S.D.A.C club officials for ensuring this event ran so smoothly and also to the Prendergast family (Ireland & U.K) for kindly presenting the beautifully crafted trophies to the winners.
